Assignment 1: Popular Sciences Article (20%)
What is it?
· A 3-page (APA or CSE, your choice) newspaper/magazine journal article that is translated from a recent scientific journal article (or a series of scientific studies)
· You will be asked to find a scientific journal article from an academic science journal from the last 5 years (published between 2019 and 2025) and write a three-page article that translates the aims findings and implications of this study or research into language that general audiences can understand. ,
· This project then expects you to be able to read and understand scholarly scientific writing and accurately relay its meanings to general readers.,
· Writing should be informative yet engaging (see examples from popular science journals),
· Format should be evocative of a newspaper or magazine journal article i.e. upside pyramid branches cause and effect (we will discuss in class),
· introduction that gives context to your chosen study/studies/research project,
· body paragraphs that explain the actions and choices of your study, etc.
· a conclusion that explains the future of this work and/or gives a picture of what it aims to do for its field
· After your article, you should have a works cited of your original article and any other sources (CSE or APA)
· Images are optional, but if used they need to be clear enough to read, have a caption attached that explains what the image is, and cited (either in caption or in your works cited)
